Whenever I start a project or begin a pattern collection I gather research like most designers do. I like to keep my research quite simple and straight forward. Once I have decide on the "rough" subject matter for my pattern collection, the first thing I do is grab my camera and head out into the world.
It is so refreshing to do this as it's great to get out into the fresh air and feel part of the planet especially as the life of a designer can be quite a solitary one especially if you work on your own as I do and you never know what gems of ideas that you will return home with.
My starting point is to take pictures of things that look vibrant, colourful and with plenty of light and shade. I am addicted to pattern so I'm always looking for pattern in nature, buildings, clothes and food!
This lily pond was taken at The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and it helped me work out a colour palette and the type of things I wanted to group together and explore for my Thai House Pattern Collection which is displayed on my main site.
