Beautiful Zurich sits in the heart of Europe and bang in the middle of Switzerland, it is easy to travel to be air, train, public or private transport. You arrive at the airport knowing that you have arrived somewhere "special". Set amongst a dramatic natural setting with a lake running through the centre and white capped mountains in the background it almost feels like you have been transported to a fairy tale. During the few days I was in Zurich I was fortunate to have a special day learning how to make pasta, not necessarily a Swiss dish but certainly a colourful experience which I am happy to have taken part in.
"Times Zurich" Its a wonderful restaurant which I would highly recommend anyone to visit if they find themselves in Zurich of course. The restaurant itself is a designers dream as everything looks like it has been there forever despite the fact that it has only been open a year. Giovanni Melis the chef and owner has many years of experience as a chef and has a hotel/restaurant in Sardinia called The Lighthouse and he has hosted and cooked for many A listers and their pets in this hotel.
Giovanni is as lovely as his restaurant and he kindly set out to teach a small group of us to make some of his signature pasta dishes. To be honest its really quite an art, which takes time and patience and is definitely not as easy as Giovanni makes it look. There are certain tools which you need to make the pasta but generally it is all done with the skilled touch of the hand and the knowledge of the maker. As a designer I have a strong appreciation of the years of skill and hard graft that it takes to reach this point of success in Giovanni's life.
Thank you Giovanni Mellis for a wonderful day making pasta at Times-Zurich Switzerland, I will return one day! In the meantime I'm contemplating making some fresh pasta of my own.
